Don't Neglect Them

THE Easter holiday brings family gatherings, trips away, religious festivities and vast amounts of chocolate.

While there is much happening it is important that pet owners do not forget about the needs of their animals.

For those heading to a holiday destination that does not accommodate pets, remember to organise alternative arrangements before heading off.

Ask a friend or neighbour to mind the animal or stop by each day to give them their feed and exercise.

If a carer cannot be found then arrange a stay at a kennel or cattery. There they will receive excellent care and be able to socialise with other animals.

Birds left at home should have plenty of feed in their enclosure, however, they do need fresh water every day, so a reliable person should be nominated to undertake this task.

Fish that are home alone can be provided for with a feeder block. The item is available from Supasave Pet Supplies in Newcastle West. Pop it in the tank and the block will feed the fish automatically. It comes in three-day, seven-day and 14-day models.

While humans indulge with chocolate eggs at Easter, pets should not be treated with such goodies. This is particularly crucial for dogs. Chocolate contains an ingredient which can be poisonous to canines.

They can instead be rewarded with doggie chocolate. This special variety is available at Supasave Pet Supplies and other outlets or veterinary clinics.

The Easter break may provide some spare time to get pets into good habits.

For pooches a smart idea could be an obedience class.

Fun 4 K9's Dog Training, situated at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre dog pavilion, teaches positive reinforcement methods to train dogs.

Treats are used to reward dogs for doing the right thing rather than forcing obedience through punishment.

Games and other activities are also included to make the classes fun for both the pet and its owner.

Easter is often a time when people decide to buy pets like cute bunny rabbits, chicks and ducklings as gifts.

Buying a pet on impulse is never a good idea. Each year countless numbers of them are deserted or given over to shelters after the novelty wears off.

Rabbits can make good household pets for those committed to caring for them properly.

However, a chick or duckling is best suited to a rural set-up.

In any case, all pets deserve our love and attention at Easter and the whole year round.
